School’s Out

November 10, 2020

I made this little something, what feels like a lifetime ago (I’m going to be saying that a lot I think). When I first moved to HK I was living near an abandoned school (since demolished) and wanted to shoot something there. Wasn’t sure what.

The whole roof topping trend was big back then, so it was always a popular spot with loud kids who weren’t very ninja, which isn’t great if you don’t want to be interrupted by police. I then met the very talented Miranda Chan and after some chatting and preliminary test shooting we decided to muck around at the school for an afternoon. There wasn’t one solid idea and what we ended up shooting was pretty improvised. It was a fun day and after the shoot I had all this cool footage.

We had several tracks that we both liked and were working with but I found when editing them, none were really building toward a nice self contained piece.

I started grabbing all sorts of tracks from my music library and dumping them on the timeline and funnily enough School’s Out by Alice Cooper just clicked. Having been shot in an abandoned school was the cherry on top.

Now this isn’t the typical way I work on videos or music videos. It’s not entirely efficient. Obviously, if you want something to have a point to it, it’s best to figure this out beforehand. It’s easy to get caught up in deliberation and never end up shooting anything.

I am guilty of this and am constantly trying to find that perfect balance
In future I think my urge to shoot something should override this because getting out and shooting can really help the process and you will probably come up with stuff you didn’t or couldn’t have thought of otherwise.
